The Clinical Services Department of The Almansor Center provides both DIS (district - funded) and AB 3632 (Department of Mental Health-funded) counseling, as well as several modalities, including family, individual, and group therapy. We serve school-aged children and adolescents who have both school and home impairments. Our diverse team of culturally competent therapists work in conjunction to attain the following:
The pursuit of case management with an integrated approach by assessing all domains of a consumer's life.
The establishment of certain educational and intellectual capacities before deliberating on other possible impairments.
The identification of consumer strengths and resources as the basis for interventions, versus focusing on incapacities.
The development of a systematic understanding of the consumer's current living situation; considering the needs and capacities of the family members/ support group.
The identification of the congruencies and disparities between the patient and family/support group.
The familiarization of medication trials/demands and their effectiveness.
The creation of dynamic formulations that address multi-diagnostic presentations, and service delivery intervention priorities.
In order to establish AB 3632 eligibility, an assessor of the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health must identify key emotional and behavioral problems which are interfering with the ability of the child to be successful academically. Problems manifested in the home must be evident in the school setting.
"Social Problems" - such as child abuse, neglect, severe parent-child conflict, delinquent behavior--which are apparent but not reflected in the school setting or are not within the scope of AB 3632 treatment. When possible, these students should be referred to the Department of Children Services, Probation, etc.
An Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.) meeting must occur for the AB 3632 referral to be made, when eligibility has been established, and/or any changes to the I.E.P. must be executed. Essentially, the I.E.P. states the current levels of functioning of the student, and dictates the necessary specialized services the student requires so that he or she can be more successful.
Once AB 3632 has been indicated, it is the responsibility of the family to contact the agency to schedule an orientation date. Both parent and child must be present for the initial appointment. It is during the Orientation that the purpose and intended outcome of Outpatient Treatment is delineated and a description of each modality--family, individual, group treatment, and, if needed, pharmacological interventions--is furnished.
